Humans fancy themselves complicated, but when it comes to genes, we’ve got nothing on a nearly microscopic water flea. In fact, the international Daphnia Genomics Consortium now reports that Daphnia pulex, a critical freshwater species, has the most genes of any animal yet sequenced. And it uses them to perform remarkable feats. Daphnia’s genome responds to environmental triggers, including predators, and spurs the growth of helmets and spikes for self-defense—in just one generation.

My dopamine tattoo.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in pleasure, happiness, mood regulation, learning, and sleep. This tattoo serves as a reminder that I literally make my own happiness, and signifies my commitment to a career in neuroscience. It’s also a great reminder that although people come and go throughout life, family, friends, anyone, that it’s up to me to be happy with myself regardless.

Okay, so ever since I was little my mom told me she was gonna go with me to get my very first tattoo when I turned 18. Welp, I turned 18 about a month ago, so this is her gift to me. I’ve been deciding on what I want, and this was my final decision. I’m got the words “love it all” in cursive underneath my collar bone on the right side. “love it all” is a song by The Kooks. They’re one of my all time favorite band and I love the song a lot! Also, when I first heard it I fell in love with the term “love it all” To me, I personally I think it means when you love someone, you don’t just love one or two things about them, you love it all. Right? So, the tattoo is basically just demanding that you, “love it all”. that’s what you need to do, is love all of me, not just some of me.
I’m in love with the results of my tattoo and I think it’s a beautiful tattoo. :)Submitted by: Layce
